"An outstanding example of industrial record filming is Mining Chrome Ore in New Caledonia, by Enoch Perkins, ACL. Probably no amateur film ever was made under more unfavorable conditions and with as little opportunity to secure special equipment to meet them. Yet the photographic quality of this film is very high and it stands as a tribute to Mr. Perkins's ability to overcome obstacles. A large part of the picture was made in a mine where the atmosphere was so charged with moisture that it was necessary to stop and wipe the lens dry every few minutes. Although lighting was a tremendous task and often cables over a thousand feet long were required, the mine scenes are accurately exposed and well photographed. The picture gives a complete record of mining ore from the solid wall of the tunnels to the loaded freighter. It was filmed from an engineer's point of view and for the specific purpose of record; however, smooth continuity and editing maintain audience interest." Movie Makers, Dec. 1933, 500, 522.

"The filming of "Nanook" was almost an accident. It was not until his third exploration trip into the North in 1913 that Mr. Flaherty packed in his kit the necessary apparatus for making a motion picture of the life of the Eskimo. For a year and a half he lived among them as an engineer and explorer and his admiration for their life, their games, and their struggles, grew on him slowly. He was immersed in enthusiasm. He knew they made fine film stuff. Then, after months of hard work, his precious film was drowned while crossing a rotten ice stream within twelve miles of the journey's end. Undaunted, he made new plans immediately for retaking the picture. His next trip to the North, made especially to take the film, was completely successful. "Photographed against the variegated background of Japanese life In Southern California, "Nisei Parade" strives to follow the lives of three nisei youths and of a girl, the sister of one of them, who returns to California after attending school in Nippon. The two young men, Ikuo and Sueo Serisawa, have taken their camera and their script into every phase of Japanese life into America. The story is centered on Jiro, one of the three nisei who is employed in one of the many huge produce markets in Southern California, and who is torn between the choice of a career as a photographer necessitating years of study, and his love for Sumi, the girl. It is the story also of George and Shig, the other two youths. The roles are capably portrayed by Tadashi Kamayatsu, Alice Iserl, Peter Takahashi, and James Sujishi. Although taken on 16mm. stock, and although it is a silent, film utilizing Japanese and English titles, "Nisei Parade" won praise for its photographic excellence when shown before various American groups, including MGM."
