"A very brief view of Conway Castle is followed by scenes from the Middlewich Show - the different stalls are seen, as well as some of the prize winning flowers and vegetables. There are shots of the smaller livestock at the show, such as rabbits, chickens and budgerigars. There is a dog show, and the Dairy Queen of Cheshire arrives with her entourage. "A ship film of an entirely different character was the stunning record of a midnight sailing by the S.S. Manhattan. Produced by Duncan Little, ACL, and presented on the program of his fourth annual movie party, this picture was caught entirely through the strength of Army airplane detecting searchlights which illuminated the sailing. Mr. Little took full advantage of his exciting setup, presenting numerous reaction shots of the great lamps and their pigmy operators silhouetted against the diffused light in the atmosphere, as well as of the beautiful new vessel picked out of the darkness by the stabbing beams." "An outstanding example of industrial record filming is Mining Chrome Ore in New Caledonia, by Enoch Perkins, ACL. Probably no amateur film ever was made under more unfavorable conditions and with as little opportunity to secure special equipment to meet them. Yet the photographic quality of this film is very high and it stands as a tribute to Mr. Perkins's ability to overcome obstacles. A large part of the picture was made in a mine where the atmosphere was so charged with moisture that it was necessary to stop and wipe the lens dry every few minutes. Although lighting was a tremendous task and often cables over a thousand feet long were required, the mine scenes are accurately exposed and well photographed. The picture gives a complete record of mining ore from the solid wall of the tunnels to the loaded freighter. It was filmed from an engineer's point of view and for the specific purpose of record; however, smooth continuity and editing maintain audience interest." Movie Makers, Dec. 1933, 500, 522.
"What would have been an excellent film under any circumstances becomes outstanding as a group production. Produced by the Minneapolis Cine Club, it was originally conceived by William S. Block, carried out under the supervision of G. L. Larson, with Earle E. Ibberson in charge of production, while club president Elmer W. Albinson did the final cutting and editing. All members contributed directly to the project, either in filming or by helping to complete the picture. In the film we accompany two teen-agers, a 4-H boy and girl, on a grand tour of the fair, visiting exhibits, marvelling at the livestock show,standing pop-eyed before the midway spectacles, puzzling over the complexities of modern art, gasping at the fireworks display against the night sky. A running gag furnishes comedy relief, while the wholesome charm of our young guides is revealed in a sympathetic and appealing fashion.
