Pierre Monteux, an orchestral conductor, became an American citizen in 1941 and resided in Hancock, Maine, until his death in 1964. He worked in Europe and the United States, conducting the San Francisco Symphony for fifteen years. He founded the Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestra Musicians in Hancock.
